Australia is the third largest producer of manganese ore in the world, producing 2.55 Mt in 2003, 12% of global production.In 2003, Australian exports of manganese ore totalled 2.14 Mt valued at A$312 million. Production comes from the Groote Eylandt Mining Co Pty Ltd ('GEMCO') and Woodie Woodie in Western Australia. Gemco’s operations are located in the Northern Territory at Groote Eylandt and is 60% owned by BHP Billiton and 40% by AngloAmerican. Approximately 70% of Gemco’s production is exported, with customers including steel and ferroalloy producers in Japan, Norway, South Korea, USA, Canada, Mexico, Europe and China. Its operations have a production capacity of 2.5 Mt a year account for approximately 15 % of the world's high grade manganese ore production.
